A Community Park Manifesto

We worked with the Bridgefoot Street Community Group to develop a Manifesto for a community park at the Bridgefoot Street vacant site in the Liberties in Dublin. The group have been campaigning for several years for a open and accessible green space at this location. We helped to distill their wishes into a design manifesto alongside a model and visualisations which were used as a basis for consultations with Dublin City Council.

A COMMUNITY PARK MANIFESTO

We are The Bridgefoot Street Park Campaign.

This Manifesto is a clear and simple statement of what this Park needs, and a call to action for the Council to build us an inspiring and active place. The Park will be built on public land. It needs to be an open, accessible, safe and social green space. The Park is an amenity for all who wish to use it. It should be operated by the community on behalf of everyone.

GARDEN & ALLOTMENTS TO GROW

An experimental garden where everyone can get involved in planting and maintaining the space. We need composting, soil which will be recycled and repaired. A place to plant vegetables and fruit trees, grow tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse sow wildflowers and harvest honey from the bee hives. Individual Family run plots for vegetable growing can be operated and run with DCC. Providing vital space for urban gardening in the heart of the Liberties.

A ROOM IN THE PARK TO SHELTER, STORE & MEET

This should be the focal point of the park. A large daylit internal space with a kitchen for the community to meet. A toilet. Storage for toys and sports equipment. Outside, there will be a wall where a film can be projected, a XXL picnic table and a rainwater storage tank for the garden, and a sheltered spot for rainy days.

PLACE FOR GATHERINGS AND EVENTS

A place where a community dinner can take place, a market at the weekends, a cinema or open air concert during the summer.

A LUSH HABITAT FOR PLANTS AND ANIMALS

We need a high diversity of native trees and planting, providing a healthy outdoor environment for humans and animals. Wildflowers will welcome pollinators, hedges for birds, an open lawn for everyone to chill in the sun.

SPACE FOR OLD & YOUNG TO PLAY& RELAX

The Park should be a playscape which integrates play into all aspects of the park. You can play everywhere in the park. A great place to play is also a good place to sit and stay, meet, relax and hang out for young and old alike.

A DESIGN THAT GROWS BETTER OVER TIME

The Park should be a playscape which integrates play into all aspects of the park. You can play everywhere in the park. A great place to play is also a good place to sit and stay, meet, relax and hang out for young and old alike.

A PLACE WITH ITS OWN IDENTITY, MADE FOR US AND BY US BUT SERVING THE CITY
